Something You Probably Didn’t Know About VDSL

What is VDSL?

Very high bit-rate DSL (VDSL) is seen by many as the next step in providing a complete home-communications/entertainment package. VDSL provides an incredible amount of bandwidth, with speeds up to about 52 megabits per second (Mbps). VDSL can only operate over copper line for a short distance, about 1.2 Km radius.

Why VDSL splitter?

Only one VDSL splitter per junction box is required in order for all the user’s phone lines to be covered.

By placing a VDSL modem in your residence or business place, and adding a VDSL splitter in the junction box, the distance limitation is neatly overcome. With the addition of a splitter users will enjoy the Analog-Digital-Analog conversion allowing faster internet speeds without voice quality interference from the phone lines.

Where the VDSL service is available?

On the 22nd September 2009 Telecom Wholesale announced “From 1st October, 2009, ISPs serving Christchurch, Fendalton, Ricccarton, Nelson, Wellington Central, Courtenay Place, Palmerston North, Devonport, Ellerslie and Howick will be able to offer this super–fast broadband service.”
